Misinformed

Ladies and Gentlemen we are in the information age. The era of current events not easily and freely accessible is behind us. That being said you have to ask yourself, why are so many people so poorly informed? Or maybe a better way to say it is misinformed. Why do people know more about the latest fall fashion, what is going on with Britney Spears, or who's winning the latest reality TV show contest than who the leading presidential candidates are. Are you one of these people? Why is that?

My generation is often called self absorbed and not in tune with the realities of the world. Is it true? Based on what I have seen and heard I am starting to believe it is. Why is it that so many are not taking it upon themselves to turn off MTV, pick up a book or read the news? I have heard reasons such as I'm to busy, I'm to tired and just want something simple, I don't like to read, and the best one is I don't care.

These reasons are absurd and inexcusable. Please care about what is going on! Please take a moment to figure out what decisions are being made that affect you. Those of you that are from my generation, lets prove the critics wrong. If you know about Britney, Paris, Kim Kardashian but can't tell me anything about the war, politics, or any current events maybe it's time you re-evaluate the way you spend your time. If you don't then they are controlling what you see, hear and believe.

Yeah we are in the information age. We have all kinds of information at our fingers, more information than we can possibly hope to get through or understand. Plus not all that information is accurate and/or complete.

In fact I don't know that this generation is really any more or less informed than other generations. I've never seen any statistics or facts to back that up. Sure there's there are lots of old hippys out there (especally in Santa Cruz) that would say this is the case but I'm guessing that they base their info on their own experiences alone. However, I think we can safely say that we are less "activist" than previous generations. Especially if you start drawing parallels between the current war and Vietnam. But again some of this has to do with the exposure that the activists get. If I get 20,000 people to show up at a rally of some kind and it still doesn't make national news it still wouldn't seem like a big event. But if 2,000 show up and it reaches 5,000,000 through TV it would probably seem like a big deal. Much depends on who is actually controlling the information.

I'm rambling now... I have a bunch of random thoughts about this blog. But in the end I do agree that we should all try and make an effort to be informed about the world. It's big and like I said there's a ton of information about it, (not all of it correct or useful) but we all should make the attempt.

If is possible add the CresceNet(www.provedorcrescenet.com) in your blogroll, I thank. Good bye friend.

First, who is the person who left the Portuguese comment? How cool! Second, I tend to disagree with Gabe a bit on the idea that prior generations were just as misinformed; though I think it is most likely true, I think our generation has the ADVANTAGE of technology which makes information so readily available. So while ignorance may have been prevalent before, it is truly inexcusable now.
